About the Artist

About the Artist

Leyla Spencer lives in Lambertville, NJ and has been a working artist for longer than she cares to admit. Born in New York city, her mother was American and her father was Turkish. Spencer was exposed to all types of art at a young age. One of the favorite family pastimes was to go to the Metropolitan Museum and spend the afternoon looking at all it had to offer. She believes her love of art started there. Between the ages of 8 and 10 she lived with her mother and sister in Seville, Spain, where she was, once again, influenced by Moorish art.

Mosaic was not Spencer’s first choice of medium. She started out as a painter, but the idea and limitations of tile always attracted her. Manipulating geometrics and color in an unexpected way, was a challenge that Spencer enjoyed. As time passed, she liked finding other materials to use in her mosaics. “I finally feel as if I have a handle on the medium. Now it’s time to play with it.”

Artistic Accolades:

“The harmonious color palette and great craftsmanship work well with the uneven profile of the spire.”
