Puzzle Spire

by Scott Fulmer

Design Statement

I aimed to design a spire that would be interactive. This stack of lettered blocks which rotate on an axis achieves my goal, and adds the element of a word puzzle. I had fun coming up with the appropriate words to include.

Materials: Steel pipe, copper ridge cap (salvaged from the roof of my old garage), HDPE plastic (repurposed from a sled), epoxy, primer & paint
Dimensions: 6″ x 6″ x 70″

Map/Spire Number: 27

Location: Sked Street Park

Address: Sked Street, Pennington NJ

About the Artist

I run my own woodworking and furniture restoration business. After college I wanted to be a wooden boat builder in Maine, but when I didn’t get the apprenticeship I hoped for my career path re-routed onto grad school and an office-based job (processing & analyzing survey data for hours on end). Twenty years of that was enough, so in 2016 I returned to my passion for wood. I design/make my own pieces and I repair/refinish old wooden furniture in a small workshop behind my house in Hopewell Borough. I’m a member of the Central Jersey Woodworkers Association.
