Founded in 1974, the Johnson Atelier rapidly became an epicenter of artistic exploration stemming directly from Seward’s passion to discover innovative methods and materials in the pursuit of making art. From all over the world, hundreds of artists gathered at the Johnson Atelier and benefited from its unique collaborative apprenticeship program, honing their skills while working with established artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, George Segal, Michele Oka Doner, Joel Shapiro, and Isaac Witkin. Many of the Johnson Atelier members have gone on to start companies, foundries, and nonprofits that continue to impact the art world. Today, many of these artists have settled in Hopewell Valley and are a testament to Seward’s belief, not only in ideas but in helping people reach their full potential.
